With commentary by Quincy Jones, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden), and Kenny G, and using interview footage, archival materials, original music, and live performances, this documentary, winner of Indie Memphis’ 2009 Audience Award, paints a picture of a thriving and vibrant music scene centered around Seattle’s small African-American population. Introduced by filmmaker Jennifer Maas.

M for Mississippi: A Road Trip through the Birthplace of the Blues
This documentary, a winner at multiple indie film festivals, takes audiences on a wild ride through the heart of the Mississippi Delta's current blues scene, from sun-drenched cotton fields to whiskey-soaked juke joints. More than just a collection of concert performances, the film collects the sounds, images and feel of both the performers and their native landscape. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening.

Sun, Aug 8 | 2 pm
Mid-August Lunch
Devoted son Gianni (Gomorrah’s Gianni Di Gregorio), caretaker to his 93-year old mother, offers to repay a debt by looking after his landlord’s mother. Suddenly Gianni, reduced to sleeping in a deck chair, is single-handedly running what amounts to a temporary geriatric ward. Italian with English subtitles.

Thurs, Aug 12 | 7 pm
No One Knows About Persian Cats
On a quest to network with other musicians, indie rockers Negar and Ashkan meet up with numerous folkies, metalheads, and rappers who populate their local music scene. Yet as the New York Times points out, “These earnest, impetuous young artists, scrambling to find space and time for rehearsal, live not in Austin or Brooklyn, but in Tehran.” Persian with English subtitles.

Thurs, Aug 19| 7 pm
Reel to Real: Scott Bomar
This monthly series continues with Memphis musician Scott Bomar, whose filmography includes Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, Gospel Hill, Soul Men, and Teenage Tupelo. Bomar will present one of his favorite films, and be on hand to discuss his selection.

Preceded by a Merlot tasting presented by Michael Hughes, GM/Wine Club Director at Joe’s Wines & Liquor. ($12 mem, $15 non-mem)

Sunday, August 22 | 2 PM

The true story of a multi-billion art heist and how they got away with it, this documentary follows the struggle of control for Dr. Albert Barnes’ 25 billion dollar coleciton of modern and post-impressionist art.

Thurs, Sept 9 | 7 pm
Respect Yourself: the Stax Records Story
This documentary, which was co-directed and co-produced by local filmmaker Robert Gordon, celebrates the triumphs of Memphis’ own Stax Records label, and the genius of its artists and musicians. Respect Yourself also examines the label's woes and its ultimate resurgence.

Sat, Sept 18| 2 pm
Wade in the Water, Children
Presented in conjunction with the Rhodes College symposium “Telling Katrina’s Stories: Interpreting Hurricane Katrina Five Years After,” this documentary was filmed by eighth-graders at the first New Orleans school to reopen in Katrina’s aftermath. The winner of the Audience Award at the New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival, it offers a shockingly intimate look into life as a child in the ruined city.

Sun, Sept 12 | 2 pm
Reel to Real: Robert Gordon
This monthly series continues with author/filmmaker Robert Gordon, chronicler of Memphis’ secret histories. Gordon’s books include It Came from Memphis and Can’t Be Satisfied: The Life and Times of Muddy Waters, while his filmography includes The Blues: The Road to Memphis, Johnny Cash’s America, Stranded in Canton, Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: ‘Cowboy’ Jack Clement’s Home Movies, and Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, also screening at the Brooks in September.
