Only for Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Members
Bring yourself, a camera, and your creativity to the Brooks to participate in our first member’s photography assignment. Using our permanent collection as your backdrop, photograph yourself (and whoever else you’d like in the picture), pick your favorite image, and then e-mail it to membership@brooksmuseum.org by April 18. ART & a MOVIE: Waste Land
Join fellow filmmakers in a make-and-take art workshop before the screening. Art materials and wine included. The documentary focuses on Brazilian “catadores,” or pickers of recyclable materials, at the world’s largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Artist Vik Muniz collaborates with these characters as they recreate self-portraits out of trash and, through the process, begin to re-imagine their lives. Beforehand, use recycled materials to make an articulated cardboard horse – or your own herd – based on a pattern created by artist Ann Wood. $7 mem/$9 non-mem.

Dr. Mikellle Smith Omari-Tundara is Professor Emerita of Theory, Methods, Art History of African, African Diaspora, and African American Art and Culture at the University of Tucson, Arizona and current Dorothy Kayser Honenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History at the University of Memphis. Dr. Omari-Tunkara has lectured internationally and written extensively on permutations of ancestral Africa in the African Diaspora;  gender, art, and power; and contemporary African art.
