The Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture is named in honor of C. Kermit "Buck" Ewing who initiated the art curriculum at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1948.

Begun in 1981, the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture is a professionally managed university gallery, funded jointly by the Department of Art and the School of Architecture.

To develop a permanent collection for the purpose of scholarly research and the enrichment of the University and regional communities.
To sponsor events that augment the curricula and expand students' awareness of art and architecture via artists' workshops, student critiques, public lectures, films, etc.

CONTINUARE
The Figurative Tradition in Contemporary Art
Aug. 9th - Sep. 12th

Continuare, in Latin, means to persist or to continue. In this exhibition, it evokes the many occasions from the nineteenth through the twenty-first century during which figurative art, and specifically figure painting, have been declared dead, of little importance, or merely irrelevant. From early modernism and abstraction, to minimalism and conceptual theory, proclamations asserting the avant-garde have been reviewed, examined, and finally exhausted, only to see figurative art reemerge as a primary focus of critical discussion. It adapts and redefines itself for the times, reassuming its role as a major motivating force for artistic expression.

Today, more and more contemporary artists utilize the human form as content in numerous media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, performance, and various multidisciplinary combinations. Contributing to this rich, ongoing tradition, the Ewing Gallery is pleased to present this exhibition of seven contemporary, regional artists who represent the human figure in their work.

A continuation of the Ewing Gallery summer series of Knoxville and vicinity artists, Continuare includes the work of:

Bain Butcher, Knoxville, TN
Judith Condon, Chattanooga, TN
Virginia Derryberry, Asheville, NC
Thaddeus Erdahl, Gatlinburg, TN
Lynda Evans, Knoxville, TN
Carl Gombert, Maryville, TN
Denise Stewart-Sanabria, Knoxville, TN
