Mission
The mission of the Brandywine River Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret for public benefit artistic and historical objects with primary emphasis on the art of the Brandywine region, American illustration and still life painting.

The mission is founded on the conviction that the special aspects of American art to which the Museum is dedicated have unique value and will be enjoyed and understood by an increasingly large and diverse audience.

To accomplish its mission, the Brandywine River Museum works with individuals and other organizations to:

  • Develop a collection of American art related to the Museum’s mission.
  • Present and study the contributions of Howard Pyle and the Wyeth family to American art.
  • Care for works of art according to professional standards.
  • Exhibit and interpret works of art related to the Museum’s mission, mindful of the need for attractive presentations that increase enjoyment and understanding
  • Conduct educational programs for the general public and specific audiences.
  • Conduct research and develop library and archival collections related to the Museum’s areas of academic interest
  • Prepare publications to inform the general public and scholars
  • Maintain buildings and grounds, including historic sites, that support the Museum’s mission
  • Recognize the role of the Brandywine Conservancy's environmental programs in protecting sources of artistic traditions.
