Neighborhood
The New Museum is located on the Bowery in the Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The Museum’s Bowery Artist Tribute is a dynamic art history of the area that celebrates and explores the presence of artists on this famed thoroughfare. Fourth Arts Block (FAB) manages a calendar of performances and events by local cultural and community groups, and the Lower East Side BID also offers a directory of shops, restaurants, and other resources for visitors. Find recommendations for nearby restaurants, bars, art spaces, and shopping from our staff members Rick (Visitor Services) and Mariana (Events) on our Tumblr.
History
The New Museum began as an idea in the mind of founding Director Marcia Tucker. As a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1967 through 1976, Tucker observed firsthand that new work by living artists was not easily assimilated into the conventional exhibition and collection structure of the traditional art museum.
Building
The New Museum, designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, is a seven-story, eight-level structure located at 235 Bowery between Stanton and Rivington Streets, at the origin of Prince Street in New York City.
New Museum Café
The New Museum is pleased to house the Hester Street Café, a collaboration with the venerated Lower East Side community market, Hester Street Fair, known as a launching pad for small, independent businesses and artists.
