Three years ago, we announced the closing of the Sharpe Planetarium, due to cuts in funding. For these last few years, the Planetarium has only been open for Saturday shows. The City of Memphis has now restored the funding. We are thrilled to announce that April 1, 2008, we will reopen the Sharpe Planetarium for weekday educational programming in addition to Saturday shows. Dick and Peggy Bodine, generous supporters of the Pink Palace Museum, provide funding for the Bodine Series of Planetarium School Programs.
Along with the reopening, comes a new face. David Maness is the new Planetarium Supervisor. Maness comes to Memphis from Newport News, Virginia, where he was most recently Director of Astronomy at the Virginia Living Museum. As Planetarium Supervisor, Maness will be responsible for all areas of management for the Sharpe Planetarium operation, including producing new programs. Maness will also be responsible for taking the Sharpe Planetarium to its next stage of development -- full-dome digital video projection.
