Mission Teen Spirit 2012 Teen Spirit showcases the most outstanding high school artwork in the region
Each year Teen Spirit brings to our area an exhibit with its own personality and a new array of fresh and exciting high school student artwork. The Yeiser Art Center is delighted to be able to showcase the talented young artists in our region. Teen Spirit was created in 1993 as a part of an ongoing effort to support the area’s art programs and to recognize the talented youth of the region. In it’s 19th year, Teen Spirit has come to symbolize the success of art education in the area. Teen Spirit is a tribute to all the schools, students, teachers, and other art professionals, whose outstanding work and enthusiasm over the years have been integral to the success of the exhibition. Three additional high schools and local home-schooled students are participating in this year’s Teen Spirit along with eight returning area high school. High schools new to this year’s Teen Spirit are Ballard County High School, Trigg County High School, and Henry County High School, Tennessee. This year’s juror is Tina McCalment, Director of University Galleries at Murray State University. McCalment holds a BS degree from University of Southern Indiana, a MA degree from Indiana University, and a PhD (ABD) from The Ohio State University. She chose 93 works from over 600 entries representing a wide range of media and technique including sculpture, drawings and paintings, digital photography, and video. Awards and summer art workshop scholarships will be presented at the Gala Opening Reception. This year’s participating schools are:
The winners of the “YAK” art competition also will be announced at the opening reception. Area students in grades K-12 were invited to submit drawings and paintings of a yak animal. First place winners were selected from elementary, middle and high school categories. Each prizewinner will receive a printed shirt of his or her submitted artwork. The top award winning entries will be considered in the development of a Yeiser Art Center logo for purposes of advertising, promotion and general name recognition. The Yeiser Art Center would like to express our sincere appreciation to Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation for their generous support for making this exhibition possible. A Gala Opening Reception is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, January 15, from 3:00 to 5:00pm. The reception is free and the public is invited. |
